The Superintendent shall be the chief administrator of the West Lafayette Community School Corporation and shall have, under the direction and accountability of the Board, general supervision of all of the public schools and of all of the personnel of the school system. The Superintendent is responsible for the administration of the Board’s established policies.

The Board is composed of elected or appointed trustees of public education. Board members derive their powers and duties from Indiana law and have responsibilities to the community they serve.

The Board recognizes and respects that it is the Superintendent’s responsibility to manage the day to-day operations of the district in accordance with the policies of the Board. The Superintendent retains discretionary authority to delegate to other school personnel the exercise of any powers and the discharge of any duties compelled by these policies. Such delegation, however, does not relieve the Superintendent of responsibility for ensuing actions.

The Superintendent’s methods of effecting the policies of the Board should be communicated to personnel through the administrative guidelines of the Corporation. The Board shall retain oversight supervision of such guidelines.

The Superintendent shall have the authority to close schools in the case of an emergency including natural disasters, epidemics or pandemics, in response to a threat made against the school, state of emergency declared by any state or federal government official, or other situations where the safety or health of students would be put at risk if schools remained in session.

The Board is responsible for conducting annual evaluations of the Superintendent’s performance. The Superintendent’s success shall be determined objectively based, in part, on his or her progress towards the goals established by the Board.

The Board is responsible for conducting annual evaluations of the Superintendent’s performance in accordance with Policy D125. The Superintendent’s success shall be assessed objectively, based in part, on progress toward the goals established collaboratively by the Board and the Superintendent.
