Human Sexuality Instruction (Grades 5–6)

In alignment with guidance from the Indiana Department of Education, our school provides age-appropriate human sexuality instruction for students in 5th and 6th grade. Our goal is to introduce key concepts in a respectful, educational setting while encouraging families to continue these important conversations at home in a way that reflects their personal values.

5th Grade Overview

6th Grade Overview

  • Instruction takes place in the regular science classroom with the student’s science teacher and is coed.
  • Materials are drawn from Sexuality and Relationships (McGraw-Hill, 1999).
  • Topics include:
    • Puberty  Ch. 2
    • Body Parts and Systems Ch. 3 & 4
    • Pregnancy Stages Ch. 12
    • Blood Borne Pathogens Ch. 13 & 14
    • Ultrasound Video
  • Indiana law requires that instruction at these grade levels includes:
    • Teaching abstinence outside of marriage as the expected standard for school-age children and the only certain way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
    • Teaching age appropriate information about consent.

We value partnering with families and encourage you to talk with your child about these topics to reinforce your family’s beliefs and expectations. If you have questions about the curriculum or materials, please contact your child’s science teacher.
